A huggie is a small hoop, generally 7mm to 13mm across, that sits tight against the lobe on a hinged closure. A hoop is larger and hangs away from the ear, with sizes here reaching two inches. The construction is the same. What changes is the diameter, the weight on the lobe, and how much the earring moves as you do.

For a first pair, 12mm to 15mm reads as an everyday hoop and stays within the line of the lobe. Under 10mm reads as a huggie and works well in a second piercing.
